OUR STUDIO
Every story has a beginning. This is ours…
Rebecca Bell has owned and operated Mindful Movements Pilates Studio since 2001. The inception and development of her fitness, pilates, and wellness programs have made her a leader in the field of fitness in the greater Fort Wayne area since moving here from Chicago in 1997. Rebecca became interested in the Pilates method after it grew in popularity in the early 90’s: “I wanted to add some more “ab” work into my classes”. Rebecca set off to Highland Park, Illinois in 1998 to work on a basic mat certification through the PhysicalMind® Institute. While in Chicago, Rebecca learned of the depth of the world of Pilates; there were more movement possibilities with the use of the many Pilates apparatuses. Rebecca continued to study the method and quickly found that moving “from the inside out” not only transformed her body and movement ability in all areas of her life, but that overuse injuries from teaching high impact aerobics could be cured. It was on one of her many drives home from Chicago that she realized that she had to share the Pilates Method with everyone she could. “I will never forget that moment when I knew exactly how I would shape my career”, she says. While raising her two daughters, she embarked on the journey of becoming comprehensively certified in the Pilates Method through the PhysicalMind® Institute in Highland Park, Illinois where she learned from physical therapists, dancers, and athletes. To this day, she has made a commitment to take every continuing education course possible, often traveling nationally.
Before the business had a name, the studio literally started in her guest bedroom where she would take people willing to be “practice students” on the reformer. She officially began the studio in a very small space in the back of Gold’s Gym. “The space was literally a storage closet with enough room for two pieces of equipment, one student, and myself,” states Rebecca. After Gold’s closed it’s doors Rebecca moved Mindful Movements Pilates Studio to Goebel Chiropractic. While the studio continued to grow at Goebel Chiropractic she also developed the group fitness program at Spiece Fitness.
The studio grew and needed more space to accommodate new instructors and a growing clientele. In 2008 Mindful Movements Pilates Studio moved to a location off of Illinois Road. It was there that the studio started its first small group mat pilates program. “Each class initially had only 2 participants”, she states.
The growth of Mindful Movements dictated yet another move in 2011, and Rebecca relocated to her current Village Of Coventry location in SW Fort Wayne. There she expanded the group program with formats that compliment the Pilates Method: TRX®, Barre Amped®, SpinPower™, as well as the M.E.L.T. Method in her group educational workshop offerings. “It is important to me that I choose licensed programs that have been researched and have solid reputations”, she states.
Rebecca continues to make herself a leader in “movement education” in the Fort Wayne area. She is currently taking courses through Polestar Pilates® to become a Post Rehabilitation Specialist, and plans to expand her knowledge in the M.E.L.T. Method®. “I love learning and developing programs to bring our clients intelligent, form-focused movement.”
As Mindful Movements celebrates it’s 15-year anniversary, the studio has seven instructors, a full schedule of private and semi-private clients, a group program that offers approximately 25 classes a week, and several one-day workshops offered throughout the year for clients to learn techniques for home practice.
